Manila Zoo Sounds Like a Nasty Place

PETA is trying to prevent more animals going to the Manila Zoo. They are working with local animal welfare groups on this issue.

Joining PETA as the petition’s signatories are the Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc. (Philippines), Animal Welfare Coalition, Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA Welfare Phils), International Monitoring Program (Philippines), International Wildlife Coalition Trust, LovePets, Network For Animals, Palawan Animal Welfare Association and Philippine Animal Welfare Society.

Good for them. Opponents like to think that animal welfare is only an issue in developed countries amongst the white middle class. That's not true. There are activists in every country of the world. Only the number may vary, but not the commitment.

Ladykat,

After a brief visit to Manila last year, the poor condition of it's zoo hardly surprises me.

The Filipinos are very warm people, but it seems that the authorities there are not capable of managing anything particularly well - the politics is a mess, the traffic is a complete mess and the number of starving children who approach you when you walk down the streets in some suburbs is just heartbreaking.

If they can't manage any of these things, I am not surprised that they can't manage animal welfare at their zoo at all.

Nevertheless, it's good to see some home grown organizations joining PETA in taking a stand.

I just saw on CNN the protest of the PETA ladies in bikini over Manila Zoo's very poor condition.

Two thumbs up for PETA group. Thank you for the intervention. Thank you for shaking up the head of those people who are behind this.

Those officials who have narrow mind and doesn't want to see the truth need to be shake up more often.
