Looks like the Australian Govt. plans to kill 3200.
The govt. says that overpopulation will cause starvation for kangaroos, and threaten other endangered species habitats. Although the article quotes activists who plan to protest, they don't really say what the alternative is. Not that I agree with the Australian govt. but it does raise the question of what should be done.

“The decision by the ACT Government to allow the Defence Department to kill thousands of kangaroos at two of its barracks will be met with strong opposition and protests on the ground by Victorian and ACT Wildlife Groups”
says Nikki Sutterby, President of the Australian Society for Kangaroos.
Nikki states
“The reasons given for this atrocious slaughter of our native animals is clearly fabricated. “
“The departments claim that the kangaroos will starve is ridiculous considering they are in very good health at the end of the worst drought on record, and have good grass now emerging after good rains.
Large scale destruction of this kangaroo population will create severe problems for native species in the area, as rabbits and other non native grazers will fill the gap left by the kangaroos, and cause widespread erosion and loss of native flora.
This is not a park set aside for protection of native flora but a defence barracks and the Department has never conducted any programmes or initiatives to protect native flora and fauna, lending much suspicion to these claims. IF the department were acting as conservationists which I doubt, a humane and logical action would be to fence off certain areas to allow the regeneration of whatever trees and shrubs they are concerned about.” States Nikki Sutterby.
Nikki stresses that
“Kangaroos already struggle to survive after the longest drought on record, as well as the ongoing threat of loss of habitat and urban encroachment, roadside deaths, and ongoing legal and illegal killing which sees the death of millions of kangaroos annually. Kangaroo numbers have now crashed by 65% since 2001, and its time kangaroos were given these last areas as sanctuaries in an effort to preserve this unique and ancient marsupial”
“I can only imagine there are alternative motives for the department that would make them treat our national symbol so appallingly and to give reasons so ridiculous for this cruel slaughter. Australians should be very suspicious of their intentions”..
Said Nikki Sutterby today.
“The Australian Society for Kangaroos and other Victorian Animal Welfare Groups will join the ACT groups and fight to the stop this horrific and unnecessary slaughter of our native animals” says Nikki Sutterby.
