Here is a good article in the Christian Science Monitor about flying with pets. My window overlooks American Airlines Cargo, so I see the happy animals let out of their carriers.
That's an interesting article -- I'm glad that they discussed the option of keeping your pet under your seat on the plane, since putting a pet in the cargo hold can be dangerous. But, as they mentioned in the article, a cat under the seat doesn't equal a happy cat...when I took mine on a plane once, I think she meowed for four hours straight.
