Don't Eat Fido: Humane Society Tips For People That Go to the Beijing Olympics

Personally, I wish you would all just stay away. I plan on watching NONE of the Olympics to protest China's lack of any animal cruelty laws, and generally rotten behavior towards animals.

But, if you do go, the Humane Society has a list of do's and don'ts.

China Says "No Dog for You!"

China has ordered dog meat to be taken off the menu at its 112 official Olympic restaurants in order to avoid offending foreign visitors.

Restaurant workers are advised to "patiently" suggest other options to diners who order dog.

Any restaurant found violating the ban would be black-listed, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Dog - known as "fragrant meat" - is eaten by some Chinese for purported medicinal properties.

The ban, issued by the Beijing Catering Trade Association, forbids all designated Olympic restaurants from offering dog and urges other food outlets to remove the meat from menus.

Meat "Made in China" Any Worse than Meat "Made in the USA?"

Good article about meat in the US. It points out that the US Olympic team is bringing its own food to China due to health concerns. But what about the crap that shows up in the US supermarkets which they will be buying anyway? How much better are American meat-packing plants than Chinese ones?

After reading this article, I'm glad I don't eat meat anymore....in any country.

Is it Possible to Boycott Chinese Goods?

It's a good question. I've decided that I want to boycott more than just the Olympic games, but, damn, LOTS of stuff comes from China. It's worrisome for me as an American....we are losing our manufacturing base. How can a country be strong economically without it?

Oh, yeah, stocks, mergers, derivatives, etc....non-tangibles. That's a sturdy basis for an economy.

This BBC News article is a good overview of the challenge of boycotting Chinese products. Electronics is particularly problematic.

Beijing Olympics an Insult to Human and Animal Rights

There are a lot of reasons why those Olympics should not be in Beijing. The country's human rights record alone is enough. But China's treatment of its animals is horrific as well. Holding the Olympics in Beijing is a reward for bad behavior and it never should have been chosen as the site. Then again, Berlin was the site of the 1936 Olympics.

Here is a UK web site with a page including all sorts of links to information on animal cruelty in China. It includes pictures and video. It's not a pretty site, but it's got lots of stuff. But be warned that you need a strong stomach for what it has to offer.

The Human Rights Side of the Beijing Olympics

This is a site dedicated to animals, but when it comes to China and the Beijing Olympics, remember that the government's cruelty affects animals and humans.

Please remember the Tibetan monks and their supporters who are dying right now as they protest one of the worst human rights situations in the world, the Chinese occupation and cultural rape of Tibet. Buddhism comes the closest of all organized religions to honoring ALL life and we want to honor the Tibetans' fight for their rights and their country.

The Olympics have no place in Beijing.
