Elk Hunting For Idiots

From the Seattle PI:

The killing of about seven elk cornered in a farm pasture in eastern Skagit County has spurred state officials to close the elk archery season in the area and angered others who either witnessed or heard about the killings.

That's right, a herd of panicked elk were cornered in a cow pasture and a group of boneheads decided to "hunt" them. Even other hunters were disgusted:

"How can you call that hunting?" asked Bob Coombs, 70, of Mount Vernon. 'You pin some animals inside a barbed wire closure then allow people to come in there and take shots at them with arrows. Good Lord. That can't be called hunting. There are some fair chase rules that any ethical hunter subscribes to."

Why is Reuters Putting News Releases From the United Egg Producers on Their Site as "News"?

The United Egg Producers issues a press release claiming that egg prices will rise 25% if animal welfare advocates get their way. All according to a study by some agribusiness related consulting firm. Reuters dutifully puts it on their website, which then gets picked up on my Google news page. Nice.

This is via LA Unleashed. A family in Byren TX are claiming they have found an image of the Virgin Mary in a bird dropping. I don't study bird droppings closely around here, although I do think I might have seen an image of St. Thomas Aquinas in a pile of dried dog doo.

Slow News Day at ALF?

A canary liberated in Mexico!

With the desire to add ourselves to the call to action to carry out wild sabotage, we of the Frente de Liberación Animal-Comando Verde Negro (FLA-CVN) have not sabotaged any institution or company, however on the morning of June 15 we rescued a canary from a cage where he was kept captive in Mexico State; we have taken a prisoner from cells which had condemned him to live his entire life in captivity. When we had happened to be passing down the street and we saw a cage with this individual inside, we jumped the fence and we carried away the canary in his cage.

Get that? They "have not sabotaged any institution or company", but they did free a small yellow bird. Far be it from me to tell a group who's tactics I disagree with how to do things, but that isn't exactly "communique worthy".

Contrarian Nonsense About the Seal Slaughter

Ah, nothing like a column defending baby sea killers to get the blood going.

WHO could defend the slaughter of 300,000 harp, hooded and grey seals by hook-wielding hunters out to make a quick buck from the seals' pelts?

I could. The increasingly shrill condemnation of Canada's seal cull is based on a view of humans as bloodthirsty destroyers of nature. I would rather stand with the seal bashers than with these people bashers.

And so it goes. British journalist Brendan O'Neill talks about how the seals enjoy the great outdoors before being clubbed to death, and how nothing could be better for them then to be "made into something beautiful".

In short, it's a troll intended to piss people off. How shocking! How edgy! Somehow I doubt he gives this issue much thought other then not liking those that do care. It's the same attitude that makes US Republicans deny global warming just to make the Democrats angry. So, he pens this little poisonous article to see what kind of reaction he can get. Yawn.

Center for Tobacco, Alcohol and Restaurant Industries Resends Press Release About PETA

It seems like every 6 months or so, the Center for Consumer Freedom, a front group for the tobacco, alcohol and restaurant industries sends out a press release about how many animals PETA allegedly kills. You can read about these people here.

They are then dutifully printed in places like this KC Star blog, although I do see that the guy had the decency to print PETA's response. I'm glad he did that. Phil Defranco did the same thing on his youtube video. Hopefully he will realize his mistake as well.

There are plenty of reasons to not like PETA, but the "Center for Consumer Freedom" is an industry front group who's primary purpose is to attack PETA. And considering their glowing website post on Republican Leader Rush Limbaugh's show along with a quote from the notoriously unfunny "comedian" Dennis Miller, you can pretty well tell what kind of people they represent.

Huckabee's Boy Scout Son Tortures Dog to Death in 1998

So what kind of values does Mike Huckabee teach his kids? His son was thrown out of Boy Scout camp in 1998 for catching a stray dog, hanging it, slitting it's throat and then throwing rocks at it. Real nice.

Yes, you can't necessarily hold the father guilty for what the son does. But, it takes a seriously screwed up value system to do something like this. And remember, Huckabee voters are the "value" voters because they are so much better at raising their families. At the time, Mike Huckabee denied the charge and claimed it was "political". Spare the rod there, Mike?

Oh, and David Huckabee also likes to try to take guns through airport security. Faux News has the story here, and also references the dog killing at the very end of the article which is why I bother to linking to it.

Fox Hunting Not a Human Right

It looks like the pursuit of the inedible by the unspeakable (as Oscar Wilde would say), is not a human right. That, according to a recent ruling by Britain's highest court.

Britain's highest court on Wednesday rejected an appeal by countryside groups against the government's ban on hunting with dogs, ruling that the law does not contravene human rights.

It was the second time the Law Lords had been asked to rule on the lawfulness of the Hunting Act 2004, which banned fox and deer hunting and hare coursing with dogs in England and Wales following similar laws in Scotland.

Campaigners have tried to have the act declared invalid and claimed it would devastate rural communities and local industries supporting hunts, such as kennels for hounds and farriers who ensure hunt horses are well-shod.

But in a unanimous decision, one of the three judges, Thomas Bingham, said the act "must be taken to reflect the conscience of a majority of the nation".

"The democratic process is liable to be subverted if, on a question of moral and political judgment, opponents of the Act achieve through the courts what they could not achieve in Parliament," he said.

They are now going to the European Court of Human Rights according to Animalblog. That sounds like an incredibly stupid argument to make.
